Senior Machine Learning Scientist - Medical Imaging

Owkin is hiring!

Efficient Data. Effective Medicine

OWKIN uses AI and machine learning to augment medical and biology research. Its proprietary platform, Owkin Socrates, uses machine learning technology to integrate biomedical images, genomics and clinical data to discover biomarkers and mechanisms associated with diseases and treatment outcomes. The company develops scientific collaborations with top-tier medical institutions and partners with leading pharmaceutical companies. Owkin has developed a state-of-the-art federated learning technology in healthcare to overcome the sharing problems associated with medical data, building collective intelligence from distributed data at scale while preserving privacy and security.

Our data scientists are among the best in the world, with several Kaggle Masters, DREAM Challenge top performers, and publications in ICML, NIPS and other top scientific journals. OWKIN is proud of its unique physician-scientist team trained in Weill Cornell and Paris University as well as pharma and CRO senior directors from Novartis, Roche, and Parexel.. Owkin is backed by renowned investors — such as Google Ventures and F-Prime — as well as a distinguished scientific board chaired by Bruno Strigini, former CEO of Novartis Oncology. To build this vision, Owkin is growing rapidly, with offices located in the USA, France, and UK.

Job Description

We are looking for senior machine learning scientists to work with the radiology and histopathology groups at Owkin Lab in Paris. Our two imaging groups are interdisciplinary teams composed of data scientists and medical doctors, working together to bring the latest tools of machine learning and deep learning to advance medical research and drug development. Our projects involve a wide variety of medical images (microscope slides, CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound) and predictive tasks (classification, segmentation, registration, survival analysis). As a member of the Owkin Lab, you will interact with scientists working on a wide variety of problems beyond medical imaging, and collaborate with them on multi-modal projects.

In this role, you will be involved in projects with medical institutes or academic partners (Centre Léon Bérard, APHP, Institut Curie), pharmaceutical companies (both in Europe and US), as well as in our internal R&D projects:

1) As an expert or a leader on our external projects you will :

  • Collaborate with other members of the Owkin Lab from all the groups (radiology, histology, clinical data, federated learning, translational) to deliver these projects
  • Discuss with doctors or clients to frame projects (what is the medical question ? which data could we use to answer it ?) and monitor them
  • Analyze medical datasets using machine / deep learning algorithms and classical medical imaging processing methods
  • Write scientific papers and project reports

2) As a Senior Machine Learning Scientist, you will also participate in our internal R&D, creating new machine/deep learning algorithms tailored to medical imaging, investigating research topics such as transfer learning, multimodal integration or domain adaptation, and developing internal libraries to accelerate all our projects.

The position is located in OWKIN Lab, our Paris-based R&D center. As such, the candidate must possess authorization to work legally in France.

Preferred Experience

  • Motivation to work at the intersection of healthcare and AI
  • Knowledge and experience with machine learning and computer vision: you have already realized projects with real-world data and are familiar with scikit learn, xgboost, convolutional neural networks, cross validation and statistical tests
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (Tensorflow, PyTorch, etc.) : you have already worked with one of these frameworks for one of your projects
  • Familiarity in Linux/Unix-like environments
  • Experience Python : 3+ years experience
  • Fluency in English

For the radiology group, we are particularly interested in a profile with experience in medical imaging data especially if you are familiar with the DICOM / NiFTI format, the physics of the scanners, the standard techniques of image processing (image registration, N4 bias field correction, segmentation algorithms etc.) and the associated libraries. Such experience can compensate a relative lack of experience in machine learning.

  • Any experience working in healthcare or any medical training
  • PhD in machine learning or medical imaging
  • Contribution to publications in conferences and machine learning journals (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, JASA, etc.) or medicine journals
  • Participation in data science projects and competitions (ex: Kaggle)
  • Experience with whole slide images and openslide library (for histology group)
  • Experience in software development best practices (git, tests, reproducibility…)

You ...

... enjoy working in a small, passionate team where your contributions will have a direct impact
... value rigorous analysis and clear communication
... want to help reveal never-before-known insights from data
