Data Scientist Intern - Translational Research Team

Owkin is hiring!

At OWKIN, we are dedicated to advancing the state-of-the-art in machine learning for medical research. From finding the next cancer-fighting molecule to tracking tumors, machine learning is an essential tool for pharmacologists, pathologists and many other medical practitioners and researchers. Our team is international, multidisciplinary with incredible talent in machine learning, medicine and business. Our data scientists are among the best in the world, with several Kaggle Masters, DREAM Challenge top performers, and publications in ICML, NIPS and other top scientific journals.
Owkin has raised a total of 18.1M$ with funds including Google Ventures and Otium capital, has offices in Paris, New-York, London and Nantes and is now looking for new talents.

OWKIN’s proprietary platform, OWKIN STUDIO, uses machine learning technology to integrate biomedical images, genomics and clinical data to discover biomarkers and mechanisms associated with diseases and treatment outcomes. OWKIN builds scientific collaborations with top-tier medical institutions and partners with leading pharmaceutical companies. OWKIN also develops state-of-the-art federated learning technologies in healthcare to overcome the need to share sensitive medical data, building collective intelligence from distributed data at scale, preserving privacy and security.

Job Description

We are looking for one new intern in the translational research team at Owkin Lab in Paris.

The translational research group is an interdisciplinary team composed of data scientists, biologists and computational biologists, working together to bring the latest tools of machine learning and deep learning to advance medical research, drug development and biological knowledge.

Our projects are mostly focused on building predictive tasks (classification, regression, survival analysis) on genomics data (WGS, WES, Targeted sequencing panels, RNA-Seq, scRNA-Seq) by incorporating prior biological knowledge to increase predictive model performances.
We are interested in multimodal integration to link non actionable biomarkers (e.g. imaging biomarkers) to actionable targetable biomarkers (e.g gene mutations) that can be validated experimentally.

As an intern, you will participate in projects with medical institutes (Centre Léon-Bérard, APHP, Institut Curie), with pharmaceutical companies both in Europe and the US, and in the development of our own internal R&D projects.

Preferred Experience

We are looking for someone:

  • Currently finishing a MS in machine learning, computational biology, bioinformatics, or an associated field
  • Motivated to work at the intersection of healthcare, biology and AI
  • With knowledge and familiar with machine learning
  • With knowledge and experience with biological data
  • With experience in Linux/Unix-like environments
  • With experience with Python and/or R
  • Fluent in English

  • Participation in data science projects and competitions
  • Contribution to publications in machine learning conferences and journals (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, JASA, etc.)
  • Contribution to publications in medical conferences and journals (AACR, ASH, ESMO, Nature, Bioinformatics, etc.)
  • Experience with NGS data workflows
  • Experience with medical imaging data (DICOM management, medical image processing)
  • Experience with git
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (Tensorflow, PyTorch, etc.)

... enjoy working in a small, passionate team where your contributions will have a direct impact
... value rigorous analysis and clear communication
... want to help reveal never-before-known insights from data
... are of course passionate about machine learning...
… but also interested in digging deeper than predictive models and understand how the results can push biomedical discoveries forward!
